The Metropolitan Expressway, which is proceeding with the Nihonbashi section underground project, and five redevelopment projects (Nihonbashi 1-chome Central District, Yaesu 1-chome North District, Nihonbashi Muromachi 1-chome District, Nihonbashi 1-chome East District, and Nihonbashi 1-chome 1 & 2 District) have named the five redevelopment areas centered on the Nihonbashi River and their surrounding areas “Nihonbashi River Walk”. On April 1, the organization, “Nihonbashi Riverwalk Area Management Corporation,” was established to promote urban development in the public and private sectors as a whole. The new organization will launch an official website and presentation base facility “VISTA” and begin full-scale dissemination of information on the Nihonbashi River Walk.
The Nihonbashi Riverwalk is an urban development project aimed at creating a new face of Tokyo as a “water city. Tunneling and redevelopment will be carried out in parallel, and the elevated walk will be completed by 2040, when the expressway goes underground. This will allow visitors to look up at the sky from the Nihonbashi River and enjoy the natural scenery along the river, which is approximately 100 m wide and 1,200 m long, in close proximity to Tokyo Station. Centered on this waterfront space and pedestrian network, complex buildings with commercial facilities, offices, hotels, and residences will be constructed in each of the five areas (to be completed sequentially from 2026 to 2038). The total area will be approximately 11 hectares.
Originally a place of work and residence, the redevelopment will further enhance commercial, office, and residential functions, and add urban functions such as luxury hotels, serviced apartments, and halls to evolve the area into a business district suitable for international MICE. In addition, the city will also aim to become a “water city” that attracts the world’s attention in terms of tourism by developing events that take advantage of the attractiveness of the waterfront and the enjoyment of boat transportation.
