NEXCO East Japan has announced its traffic congestion forecast for the Bon vacation period in 2025. The congestion is expected to be centered in the morning for downstream traffic and in the evening to nighttime for upstream traffic, and the number of traffic jams is expected to increase compared to last year, when typhoons affected the region.
The peak period is expected to be August 9 and 13 for the downhill and August 11 and 16 for the uphill. 148 traffic jams of 10 km or more are expected to occur from August 7 to 17 in total. The largest traffic jams are expected to be 40 km near the Yaita Kita PA on the downhill side of the Tohoku Expressway at around 8:00 a.m. on August 9 and 40 km near the Sakado Nishi SIC on the uphill side of the Kanetsu Expressway at around 4:00 p.m. on August 16 (both peak hours).
In addition to changing the days and times of use to avoid congestion, the report also calls for caution against unintentional speed reductions and driving in the wrong direction. In particular, for travel between the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Tohoku Expressway north of Sendai, the company recommends driving via the Joban Expressway, which is less congested.
