Big Island Candies and Lauren Ross Collaboration Box Big Island Candies is a precious Hawaiian cookie that only has a flagship store in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii and a directly operated store in Ala Moana Center. They are known not only for the taste of their crispy shortbread, but also for the beauty of their gift boxes. Among them, the collaboration box they released on the 2nd of this month has been the talk of the town. The box was designed by Lauren Ross, a local Hawaiian artist who is also popular in Japan. Her typical soft and brightly colored design jumped out at me as I entered the store. The concept, she says, is to bring bright hope and energy like summer sunshine to people’s hearts. Lauren explained that she titled her design “From the Heart” to reflect her friendly and kind personality. The work is a bit bolder and more vivid in color than my other pieces, as it was a time of great change in my own life,” she said. The box is filled with brownies, toffee, and biscotti, in addition to macadamia nut shortbread (7 pieces) and chocolate chip macadamia nut shortbread (7 pieces). It’s well worth the price as a gift (available for $59 at the Ala Moana Center store and $57 at the Hilo flagship store and online). Lauren also has a small child, and a portion of the proceeds from the sales of this special box will be donated to HUGS, a charitable organization whose mission is to ease the emotional and financial burden faced by Hawaii’s children with serious illnesses and their families and to improve their quality of life. HUGS’ mission is to ease the emotional and financial burdens faced by Hawaii’s children with serious illnesses and their families and to improve their quality of life.
