MOL Cruises, operator of Mitsui Ocean Cruises, announced that the new cruise ship, scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2026, will be named MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA.
One of the captains for the debut season will be Satoshi Ninomiya, who once served as captain of Nippon Maru, and the executive chef will be Katsutoshi Nakayama, who also served on Nippon Maru.
Mitsui Ocean Cruises currently operates two cruise ships: Nippon Maru, which is scheduled to retire in May 2026, and MITSUI OCEAN FUJI, which began operation in December 2024. The new cruise ship, MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA, will take advantage of the compact size of the ship, with a gross tonnage of 32,000 tons and a length of less than 200 meters, to offer a lineup of mainly short- to medium-term cruise itineraries to and from ports around Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. The company also plans to market one-night cruises, festivals, fireworks, music and food-themed cruises. The ship will have 229 guest rooms and a passenger capacity of 458. As with the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, the meals will incorporate “traditional Japanese elements cultivated as a Japanese cruise company,” according to the company.
Details of the commemorative cruise will be announced and sales will begin in winter 2025 or later.
