East Japan Railway Company (JR East) is recruiting “customer monitors” for a demonstration experiment of a face recognition ticket gate.
The experiment will be conducted from November 6 to March 31, 2026 (excluding December 25 to January 7) at the Shinkansen ticket gates at Nagaoka Station and the Shinkansen East ticket gate at Niigata Station. In addition to the usefulness of the ticket gate function, sound and video guidance will also be tested. Different concepts of ticket gates will be tested: an arch-type one manufactured by Panasonic Connect will be installed at Nagaoka Station, and a gate-type one manufactured by NEC will be installed at Niigata Station.
Those eligible to participate in the monitoring program are junior high school students and older who hold a Suica FREX commuting pass or Suica FREX Pal commuting pass between Nagaoka Station and Niigata Station. Applications will be accepted at “Igottier Nagaoka” on the 2nd floor of Nagaoka Station between 3:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. from October 6 to 17, and the registration will be completed after the details of the commuting pass and a picture of the user’s face are taken.
Monitors will be required to use the face recognition ticket gate during the experimental period and cooperate with a questionnaire. Participants will receive a 3,000-yen voucher for use at the CoCoLo station building.
