A look back at the overwhelmingly popular “Italian Pavilion” works. After the Expo closes, the “Atlas Statue” will be shown in a special exhibition!

Architecture and Theme Designed by architect Mario Cucinella. The theme is “Art Regenerates Life. Taking a cue from Renaissance cities, theaters, plazas, and gardens were recreated within the pavilion. The building is constructed using a lot of wood, and the materials can be reused after the exhibition is over.

Atlas, a masterpiece of ancient statuary, placed at the center of the museum. The marble statue “Atlas of Farnese,” created in the 2nd century, is displayed in the piazza “Piazza” in the center of the museum. The work depicts the giant Atlas with the celestial sphere on his back, and is usually housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It was exhibited for the first time in Japan at the Expo, and the fact that the actual statue was transported to Osaka itself created quite a stir even before the opening of the exhibition. The statue is 193 cm tall, the diameter of the celestial sphere is 66 cm, and it weighs approximately 2 tons. Standing in front of the statue, one is overwhelmed by its size and presence. The celestial sphere on its shoulder is inscribed with the constellations of the time, allowing visitors to see up close what the ancients depicted of the universe.

Sculpture installation of 30 hearts in a row. Also in the “Piazza” exhibition area, the eye-catching ceramic sculpture installation “Apparato Circolatorio” (Circulatory System) consists of 30 hearts arranged in a circular shape. The work is by Italian contemporary artist Jago and is usually housed at the Museo Jago in Naples. Each piece measures 15 x 15 x 30 cm (W x D x H), and upon closer inspection, one notices that each has a slightly different shape. In addition, a 3D animated heartbeat is projected on a screen behind the jagos, making them appear as if they are pulsating without beginning or end, reminding us of the continuous cycle of life. This work truly expressed the main theme of the Italian Pavilion, “Art Reborns Life.

Other interesting exhibits included AI and robot technologies for living in an aging society, urban planning and infrastructure development, and architectural projects related to sporting events through video and hands-on events. The exhibition of the engine technology and next-generation mobility of Italy’s pride and joy, Ferrari, and an exhibition of artwork using notebooks from the stationery brand Moleskine, which was held for a limited time, were also interesting. The torch for the torch relay for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics and Paralympics to be held in 2026 was also unveiled at the Expo and proved to be a popular exhibit.
