Background and Objectives

From Tuesday, December 6 to Friday, December 9, Professor Koichiro Matsuda of Rikkyo University gave a special JICA Chair Lecture. A total of about 700 students interested in Japanese history and culture gathered at the venue. In Turkey, a pro-Japanese country, Japanese studies have been conducted at several universities, and there are many Japan-oriented human resources in various parts of the country. Last year, when the JICA Chair was first held in Turkey, online lectures were held in cooperation with Middle East Technical University in Ankara, and this year, in addition to Middle East Technical University, lectures were held in person at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul and Nevşehir Hajı Bektaş Veli University, which has newly established a Japanese language and literature department.

Contents

This will be the third JICA Chair in Turkey, following the first (January 11, 2022, Middle East Technical University) and second (March 18, 2022, Middle East Technical University). The special lecture, “Intellectual and Social Aspects of Japan’s Modernization,” was given by invited lecturer Professor Koichiro Matsuda of Rikkyo University, who specializes in the history of Japanese political thought, and focused on Japan’s political thought and social background from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century, explaining the changes and continuities in these areas. The lectures were given in a face-to-face format over three days at all three schools.

On Tuesday, December 6, the lecture was held at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara with approximately 70 students in attendance, and was opened by Ambassador Kazuhiro Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to Turkey.

On Thursday, December 8, the lecture was held at the University of Nevsehir Haj Bektaş (Nevsehir), where the Department of Japanese Language and Literature was established in 2017, and was a great success with approximately 500 students attending, exceeding the capacity of the venue.

On Friday, December 9, the lecture was held at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. About 100 students participated in the lecture as well as online, and there was a Q&A session and discussion on Kabuki and period drama that developed under the political system of the time.
