Biratnagar City, the capital of the 1st Province located in the southeastern part of Nepal, has a growing population and economic growth, which has led to an increase in water demand, but the water supply penetration rate for each household is only about 30 percent as of 2019. The water source for all water supply facilities is deep wells, but both water quantity and water quality face challenges. With regard to water quantity, over-pumping to meet increasing water demand has become the norm, and there is a possibility that the amount of water that can be pumped will decline, necessitating new deep wells to provide a new water source. Regarding water quality, iron and manganese have been detected in existing deep wells in excess of standard values.
Under this cooperation, water supply facilities will be upgraded and expanded in Biratnagar City, Region 1, to improve water quality and realize a stable water supply, thereby contributing to the improvement of the living environment of the citizens.
