Dar es Salaam Electricity System Master Plan Development and National Electricity System Master Plan (2012) Update Project

Posted on 2023-01-152023-01-15 by Editor in Chief

In Tanzania, new construction of power facilities and maintenance of existing facilities have not always been carried out properly in response to the growing demand for electricity. As a result, many of the facilities owned by the Tanzania Electricity Supply Corporation (TANESCO), which is responsible for supplying electricity throughout Tanzania, had become obsolete and were chronically overloaded, forcing the company to purchase power from independent power producers, resulting in a serious operating deficit. The Tanzanian government has developed a 25-year National Power System Master Plan (PSMP) since 2008 and revised it in 2012, but the PSMP was not based on solid data for electricity demand forecasting, power supply development planning, grid analysis, grid planning, etc., and the PSMP is not a master plan. However, the PSMP was not a sufficient master plan because it was not based on solid data for electricity demand forecasting, power supply development planning, grid analysis, and grid planning. In addition, a master plan for the capital city of Dar es Salaam, which was developed through Japan’s cooperation in the study, was not updated afterwards and did not address the expansion of electricity importance in Dar es Salaam.

This cooperation contributed to the smooth implementation of power development in the country by reviewing the National Power System Master Plan (PSMP 2012) and developing the Dar es Salaam Power System Master Plan (Dar es Salaam PSMP), which will contribute to the stable supply of electricity in the country.
