Indonesia is geographically and topographically prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. The country’s Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is in charge of earthquake and tsunami observation and warning dissemination in Indonesia, and through BMKG’s efforts and donor support, a system for disseminating information on earthquakes and tsunami warnings that occur around Indonesia has been established, and the observation network has been strengthened and the system has been continuously improved. The observation network and systems have also been continuously improved. However, the occurrence of a series of earthquakes and tsunami disasters in 2018, which resulted in tsunami warnings not being issued, inaccurate tsunami warnings being issued, and warnings not reaching residents, made it clear that further improvement in the accuracy, reliability, and immediacy of earthquake information and tsunami warnings issued by BMKG is essential, especially for mitigating human suffering. It became clear that further improvement of the accuracy, reliability, and immediacy of earthquake and tsunami warnings issued by BMKG is essential to mitigate human suffering.
This cooperation will strengthen BMKG’s capabilities from earthquake and tsunami observation to information dissemination, thereby improving BMKG’s ability to transmit more timely and accurate earthquake information and tsunami warnings to disaster management agencies and residents, and contributing to the promotion of disaster management activities by disaster management agencies and residents.
