The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) of up to 12 billion yen with the Government of the Republic of Tunisia on January 27 in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, for the “Support Project for Strengthening Social Protection.
In Tunisia, unemployment and poverty rates are rising due to the impact of the new coronavirus infection and the conflict in Ukraine, and social unrest is increasing due to soaring prices. Although the country has established some public assistance programs such as cash transfers for the poor and vulnerable, there is a gap between the current poverty rate and the ratio of households eligible for benefits.
In light of this situation, this project will contribute to SDG Goal 1 (Eliminate Poverty) by supporting the appropriate selection and expansion of households covered by social security, thereby improving the livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable in the country. The project will be supported through co-financing with the World Bank.
