JAL launches Japan’s first one-stop logistics service at Narita. We have seen its ability to export fresh foods caught in the morning on the same day.

On February 27, JAL Cargo Service Co., Ltd. showed the media the first shipment of Japan’s first “one-stop logistics” at its new facility in the Narita City Public Local Wholesale Market. One-stop logistics is a system that shortens the time required for delivery of goods by conducting a series of processes in the market, such as quarantine, customs clearance, and container loading, which were previously conducted in the airport. As Japanese fresh food products are highly valued overseas, this logistics service is expected to lead to further increases in exports.

JAL’s Rolling Plan 2022, the JAL Group’s medium-term management plan, calls for “capturing high-unit-cost cargo demand by building a production system that enables quality control and shorter lead times,” and one-stop logistics will be in line with this management strategy.

As explained in the figure below, the one-stop logistics service makes it possible to arrive at the local market on the following day, instead of the conventional late-night arrival in Hong Kong on the day after the landing, which was by air after various operations and formalities. The one-stop logistics service enables the cargo to arrive late at night on the day of landing and be delivered to the local market the next day, while in Hong Kong it would arrive late at night the day after landing.

The Narita Public Local Wholesale Market, where JAL Cargo Service has set up a bonded warehouse, opened on January 20, 2022, and is located in the Tenjinbo district adjacent to Narita Airport’s Runway B. This market is also significant because it requires only a short time for transportation to the airport.

Yoshinori Morimoto, President and Representative Director of JAL Cargo Service, gave an address at the ceremony, which was followed by congratulatory speeches from Kazunari Koizumi, Mayor of Narita City; Hiroki Koshikawa, Director of Production Distribution Strategy, Chiba Prefectural Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; and Makoto Tanabe, Director and General Manager of Sales Division, Narita International Airport.

In his remarks, President Morimoto introduced Chiba Prefecture as one of the top producers of both agricultural and marine products in Japan, and its geographical advantage in being able to deliver quality products to foreign countries while maintaining their freshness. He also spoke of the Narita market as an important market that can contribute to the government’s goal of increasing exports of agricultural, forestry, and marine products and food products to 5 trillion yen by 2030. In a true sense, it is a fresh food market that takes advantage of its location adjacent to the airport. In other words, we at JAL Cargo, in cooperation with all related parties, will contribute to the expansion of exports of Japanese agricultural and marine products so that the Narita International Fresh Produce Market will be unique in the world.

The first shipment (totaling 2,665.7 kg) utilizing one-stop logistics was ordered by seven shippers and shipped to BKK (Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok), SIN (Changi, Singapore), SGN (Tan Son Nhat, Ho Chi Minh City), HAN (Noi Bai, Hanoi) and HKG (Hong Kong). At the time of the interview, strawberries harvested in Narita City on the 26th and fresh fish shipped directly from the port on the same day were on display.
