The Ministry of Health of the Lao PDR has positioned “supply of healthcare services and hospital management” as a key issue for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2025, and is working to establish a hospital certification system to improve the quality of healthcare, and plans to establish certification standards and conduct evaluations. The Japanese government supported the improvement of the quality of healthcare services in the four southern prefectures of the country in response to the “supply of healthcare services and hospital management. As a result, a system for implementing activities to improve the quality of healthcare services at hospitals was established, enabling each hospital to formulate and implement a quality improvement plan under a limited budget, and patient satisfaction with healthcare services has improved. However, since the certification of the hospital accreditation system includes the evaluation of hospital quality, it is necessary to work on continuous improvement of the quality of healthcare services, and further support is needed for the implementation of quality improvement activities in line with the hospital accreditation items newly established by the MOH, and for the areal expansion to the county level. Improvements in accounting management in hospitals are also needed.
In this cooperation, activities related to the quality of healthcare services and improvement of hospital accounting under the hospital accreditation system will be carried out in the four southern provinces of the country to ensure that a system is in place for healthcare services to be provided with adequate quality and with appropriate health insurance coverage, thereby contributing to the maintenance of quality healthcare services and strengthening the economic protection of the beneficiaries.
