At the request of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines, JICA will dispatch an international emergency relief team and a team of experts to the oil spill damage caused by the sinking of an oil tanker off the coast of Mindoro Island.

Disaster Situation
On February 28, the oil tanker Princess Empress capsized off East Mindoro Island in the central Philippines and sank on March 1. Some of the approximately 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil on board spilled into the surrounding waters, causing concern over marine pollution, environmental impact, and loss to the fishing industry.
Dispatch of International Emergency Relief Teams and Expert Teams
(1) Under these circumstances, at the request of the Philippine government, the Japanese government decided to dispatch an international emergency relief team and a team of experts, and JICA began preparations for the dispatch of this team. The outline is as follows.
a. Purpose: Personnel with expertise in oil spill response will be dispatched mainly to the command post, etc. of the destination government’s oil spill response (assuming the Coast Guard under the Ministry of Transportation) to provide information gathering and analysis support, technical advice, and consideration of future support policies.
Number of persons: 8
c. Schedule: March 10 (Fri.) Departure (Haneda Airport) March 21 (Tue.) Return (Haneda Airport)
d. Formation Ceremony: To be held at JICA Headquarters (Kojimachi) on Thursday, March 9, from 6:20 p.m.
