On March 27, the Japanese government made some passport (passport) applications online. The conventional over-the-counter process required two trips to the passport office, once to apply and once to pick up the passport, but with the online application, it is only at the time of pickup.
The passport renewal for which the “remaining period is less than one year” and the “margin of visa space is less than three pages of the facing page” is supported requires a my number card, a smartphone compatible with card reading, and the mynaportal application.
The fee is 16,000 yen for a 10-year passport, 11,000 yen for a 5-year passport, and 6,000 yen for a 5-year passport for those under 12 years old. If the remaining period is more than one year and the visa space is insufficient (less than 3-page spread), a passport with the same remaining period can be issued for 6,000 yen.
Although first-time applicants, those already expired, and those whose name or legal domicile has changed are not eligible for online application, some municipalities will begin accepting submission of a copy of the family register (certificate of all matters) for new applications and changes in entries by registered mail to eliminate the need to visit the counter at the time of application. For details, please refer to the following municipalities’ links.
