ANA and JAL procured SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) mixed in Japan from ITOCHU Corporation.
The SAF raw fuel is produced by Neste of Finland, a renewable fuel manufacturer. It was imported through a demonstration project led by the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and blended with jet fuel in Japan. Jet fuel is blended with neat SAF (pure SAF before blending), which is produced from non-petroleum derived animal fats, cooking oil, and waste, at a ratio specified by international standards. The domestic blending is expected to reduce GHG emissions and improve economic efficiency, as well as clarify quality control procedures and confirm consistency with various laws and regulations.
ANA will utilize this service on scheduled international and domestic flights departing from Haneda and Narita airports.
JAL will install SAF at Centrair (Chubu) from April onward. JAL also plans to install the newly procured SAFs at Haneda and Narita airports in sequence.
