International Emergency Assistance for Cyclone Freddy in the Republic of Mozambique -Delivery of Donated Goods
Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have been handed over to the Republic of Mozambique (hereinafter referred to as “Mozambique”) in response to the damage caused by Cyclone Freddy in the country.
Emergency relief supplies for Mozambique arrived in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, at 10:00 a.m. on April 13 (local time) at the National Institute for Disaster Reduction (INGD), with INGD President Luísa Celma Meque in attendance from Mozambique and Hajime Kimura, Ambassador to Mozambique, and Hitoshi Matsumoto, former JICA The ceremony was attended by INGD President Luísa Celma Meque from the Mozambican side and Hajime Kimura, Ambassador of Japan to Mozambique, and Hitoshi Matsumoto, former Director of the JICA Mozambique Office.
At the handover ceremony, the President of INGD expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt assistance and stated that the supplies would be delivered promptly to the severely damaged areas. In response, Ambassador Kimura and former JICA Mozambique Office Director Matsumoto expressed their desire to continue sharing Japan’s long experience in natural disaster risk management with Mozambique.
JICA plans to launch the “Comprehensive Master Plan for Flood Countermeasures for the Resilience of the Maputo Metropolitan Area” project in 2023 to provide support for flood risk assessment, structural and non-structural countermeasures, and the formulation of a master plan for flood countermeasures.
The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the victims by the government of the country.
