The Takachiho Adventure Tourism Council, consisting of Trailhead, Takachiho Mountain Association, Takachiho Town Planning and Tourism Division, and others, has launched an adventure program that offers a completely private packraft tour experience in the backcountry of Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture.
Packrafts are rubber boats that are inflated with air and can be transported to remote areas of nature where it is not possible to take kayaks and other equipment. This time, with the cooperation of local people, a packraft tour was planned in “Obashi Gorge,” which is located 5 km upstream from Takachiho Gorge and is also called Oku-Takachiho Gorge.
The tour will take you to a fantastic waterfall that can only be seen by packraft. While listening to the guide’s introduction about the history and lifestyle of Takachiho, visitors will explore the canyon, which was carved by pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso and formed over a long period of time. This is a special activity that allows visitors to see the columnar joints formed by the lava of Aso from the surface of the water.
The fee is 15,000 yen, with a maximum capacity of 2-8 people (junior high school students and older). The tour is open from April to November (9:00-12:00), and part of the proceeds will be donated to Yatsutaru Ryugu Shrine, the departure and arrival point for the tour.
