LEARN with Porsche programs will be held in the Tokachi area of Hokkaido in the summer of 2021 and in the Shikoku area in the summer of 2022, and Travel Watch has reported on these programs in detail. Uninformed, the participants will overcome various challenges and meet the latest Porsche models on the last day of the program. The experience and the elation of the participants must have been quite a unique experience for them.
Porsche Japan supports this idea through LEARN with Porsche. You may wonder why Porsche is supporting young people, but the company has been supporting young people who are the future with its “Porsche. The concept is based on the idea that “there is no superiority or inferiority in having a dream,” and is part of Porsche’s efforts to support young people who have given up on their dreams, have lost their confidence, or feel that they are not fulfilling their potential.
LEARN with Porsche, which is the genesis of LEARN, is a program led by the laboratory of the “Research on Optimal Individualized Learning” Endowed Research Division led by Senior Research Fellow Kengryu Nakamura at the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology. It is a place to pursue what new learning is best suited for individual children through practice.
The program brings together young people from all over Japan and provides them with the opportunity to develop their abilities in an environment that is best suited for each individual, while also providing them with opportunities for awareness that will enhance their self-confidence and motivation. The program has been held in 2021 and 2022, and a reunion was held in the season of blooming cherry blossoms to bring together the scholarship students (participants) from all over the country who have participated in the past two programs.
The participants did not have time to think about the implications of the program, as the program ended in a hurry to disperse. Mr. Nakamura said, “At the end of last year’s program, we all drove our Porsches to Haneda, got off at the airport, said goodbye, and broke up and drove away. This time, I wanted to give everyone a chance to look back on the past two years,” he told the participants, and the meeting began with a video digest of the past two years being played in the hall.
The meeting, which could be called a two-year joint reunion, was held in March at the Nakamura Laboratory in the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, where LEARN’s headquarters is located. Ten participants came to the laboratory, while others participated online or otherwise, and many seemed to actively participate. Many came from as far away as Kagoshima, Osaka, and Mie. Although only a few years have passed, it was impressive to see how much they have grown and how confident they looked.
Scholarship students gain unexpected confidence
Mr. Nakamura was surprised at the growth of the participants, and while listening to everyone’s updates, he said, “I don’t really think about teaching anything at LEARN, but rather, I take the stance that it is the participants who will try things at the new places that appear daily, and make use of what happens there. I don’t think of it as studying for an exam or something like that, where you are always told, “Do this. There is the idea that it is okay to live in a society where people are constantly being told what to do. I want people to know that it is okay to live in a society where people can live more freely, and that there are adults who do so. We want to create a vibrant society. It’s okay to have different opinions. I think it is important for people to know that different ideas exist,” he said, casually touching on the significance and direction of the program.
The participants interspersed their recent updates and talked about how their feelings changed after participating in LEARN with Porsche.
I was inspired to live on my own; I was able to think positively and say, “This is ok! I started to think more positively about my relationship with the world and the people around me, I started to try places and things I have never been and things I have never done, I started to enjoy studying for exams ……, and so on. It seems that the program had a more positive impact on them than they had expected.
I think I felt a lot of things by spending time with people who live by different values than those of taking exams and taking tests. In today’s world, there are too many clear-cut rules about what one must do, and I think there are people who are trying too hard in places they are not suited for. Learning is important. Without basic knowledge, you may not be able to keep up even if you enter the university of your choice. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go to a university with only one goal in mind,” he said.
To an aspiring engineer participant who said he became physically active in the process of technical home education, Mr. Nakamura half-jokingly invited him, “Let’s restore that vintage Porsche tractor together. This kind of orientation is an interesting part of meeting new people. I imagine that one day he will want to restore old engines, not only that tractor, and actually take action.
After experiencing LEARN with Porsche in Hokkaido, some participants chose to attend a university in Hokkaido because of its attractiveness. The great nature must have appealed to them. It can be said that LEARN with Porsche is spreading to young people and influencing their life choices in more or less the same way. This is also a great influence.
Participants who are passionate about tanka have gained a sense of value, saying that if they do not fit in their environment, they want to go to places where they are free and think deeply about what they discover there, and they have even been able to win tanka poetry awards. She spoke passionately about how she found tanka more appealing than spending time studying at school.
The participant, who was lost but still passionate about playing music, remembered our music discussion and asked, “Do you know the band INXS (INXS)!” he asked me cheerfully. Of course I knew them. I was a big fan in real time. It is very encouraging to see people discovering music with new sensibilities in this way. After the meeting, we had another great time talking about rock music, and I recommended that he try to form a band while he is still young. I hope that they will bring a new wind to the Japanese rock scene.
There was also a participant who decided to live as a musician, wanting to honestly start doing what he loves without regrets. These two music types had never met each other before, but they seemed to hit it off immediately and left together after the meeting was over.
I had no idea what I wanted to do in the future, but I found what I wanted to do, and when I thought about why, I remembered my experience at LEARN with Porsche and the various adults I met,” he said, which was truly impressive. When I thought about why all the adults involved in this program seemed so bright, I realized that they were proud of the work they loved, which was amazing, and I was able to think about the future.
I am glad to hear you say so. It is said that the percentage of young people in Japan who have hope for the future is very low. Is that true? There is potential in the youth, and I think the world is just a place where no one says or can say what they hope for,” Nakamura opines. This is probably the essence of LEARN with Porsche. The young participants absolutely have potential. While respecting their independence, we want to give them a chance to bring out as much of it as possible. This is the direction that this activity is aiming for.
Another impressive point was when one participant told us, “The most memorable part of LEARN with Porsche was knowing that it is okay to fail. He also said, “From now on, I want to live my life while making many mistakes.”
In response, Mr. Nakamura said, “Well, ……. I’ve been told I shouldn’t fail,” he said, his shoulders slumped. Nowadays, everyone thinks too much that they have to be perfect. That’s right. That’s why people don’t want to drive cars that break down. I used to drive only antique cars that broke down a lot. They would stop working right away and I would miss my flight. So I would think about what to do. That’s my daily life. Nowadays, many people don’t tolerate such irregularities, and at LEARN, I’m just giving people the chance to experience what I enjoyed as a child,” he says, without taking offense.
I agree with myself in thinking that failure is fine, that everything begins with failure, and that detours are the most fun. In fact, it is not until you have lived to a certain extent that you realize that failures and irregular troubles are the treasures of life. When you are young, failure and troubles make you think that it is the end of the world. However, as long as you are alive, you may wonder later what was so trivial about it all. Sometimes, there is nothing wrong with losing. It is wonderful that you have just now realized that.
Now, the LEARN with Porsche will be held again this year, with registration starting June 1, and the dates scheduled for August 21-25 (with the possibility of the 26th being added).
This is not just a mystery tour. It is a practical scholarship program that will help you throw away your cell phone, solve the problem by yourself and your friends, and realize your potential. Of course, you cannot be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and nothing is revealed in advance except what you bring. With the exception of some meals and beverages, travel and lodging expenses are not covered by the scholarship. Academic ability is not required for recruitment, and there will be an individual interview after screening of documents. This year, the program will also offer a program for participants who like to make things.
