In late July, the Hawaii Visitors Authority Japan (HTJ) and Hawaiian Airlines (HA) held a five-day, three-night “Hawaii (Oahu) Educational Tour Training Program. Educational tours are mainly for junior high and high school teachers to visit school trip destinations (or candidate destinations) in advance to study local destinations, hotels, student fees, etc. The program was temporarily suspended due to the Corona disaster. This year, after a three-year hiatus due to the Corona disaster, the first call for applications was made for a total of 10 participants from eight public and private schools in Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Hyogo, and Fukuoka prefectures, who toured various facilities to learn about Hawaii’s history and nature. Hawaii, as seen through school excursions, has a different aspect from so-called “resort destinations,” and is said to be not only beneficial for children’s education, but also fascinating for the depth of the experience that even adults become absorbed in. This article introduces some aspects of the Hawaii tour. We hope that those who are new to Hawaii and those who are planning to visit Hawaii in the future will find this information useful in their planning.
Japan – Honolulu direct flights are resuming one after another. Hawaiian Airlines’ in-flight service stirs excitement even before arrival. This inspection tour took advantage of Hawaiian Airlines’ nonstop flights from Haneda, Kansai, and Fukuoka. The company currently operates an average of 21 flights per week on its Japan route, and has announced plans to increase the number of flights to 31 per week this summer in August, and to resume the Shin-Chitose (Hokkaido) to Honolulu route with three round trips per week in March 2024. For the purpose of comparing the long flight time (approximately 8 hours) to Hawaii and the in-flight service, two types of seats, “Extra Comfort” for the outbound flight and “Economy” for the return flight, were prepared for the passengers. The aircraft was an Airbus A330. The aircraft is an Airbus A330, with a profile of a woman with a hibiscus flower in her hair on the tail of the fuselage. The flight time is approximately 7 hours and 50 minutes, using flight HA864 from Haneda (20:15) to Honolulu (09:05) as an example, which I actually boarded on the outbound flight. The seat pitch of Extra Comfort is approximately 13 cm wider than that of Economy, and there is a little more legroom. In addition to a personal monitor (common to all classes) and USB port (common to all classes) for enjoying movies and music, each seat is equipped with an AC power supply. For teachers who work on board, the ability to recharge their PCs is also appreciated. Note that as of July, in-flight Wi-Fi has not been introduced on this aircraft. However, in partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink, the company plans to begin offering high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi on some flights between Asia and Hawaii in 2023. Next, let’s take a look at in-flight meals. On the Japan-Honolulu route, the main meal (approximately one hour after takeoff) and a light meal (approximately one and a half hours before landing) will be served twice on each round-trip flight. The main meal on flight HA864 (outbound) will consist of a hamburger steak with mushrooms in a rich sauce (the loco moco bowl will be suspended for the time being due to an egg shortage), rice, salad, and Honolulu cookies, a popular souvenir from Hawaii. Fruits, muffins, and yogurt were distributed in eco-friendly paper bags. On the other hand, flight HA863 from Honolulu (1:55 p.m.) to Haneda (5:10 p.m. the next day), which we boarded on the return trip. This flight also had two meals, with staples including a beef bowl, fruit, bread, and coconut cookies. For snacks, one-hand sandwiches (tuna mayo and lettuce) are also distributed in paper bags. During the meal, passengers can order their favorite beverages, such as cold Japanese tea, hot black tea, or Maui Beer, Hawaii’s representative craft beer. Of these, we recommend the “Lion Coffee,” a special blend made by Hawaiian Airlines. We hope you will enjoy this special cup of coffee, which was developed so that passengers can enjoy its mellow aroma and fresh richness even during flights when boiling water, which is considered the ideal temperature for brewing delicious coffee, is not available. Next, let’s look at the amenities. In Extra Comfort, passengers receive an eye mask, toothbrush set, earphones, earplugs, bamboo comb, skin care kit, and tissues in a felt pouch. In Economy, an eye mask, earphones, and earplugs are distributed in a paper package with a logo. Although the contents vary depending on the class of service, all of them are eco-friendly lineups in collaboration with a local brand “Kealopiko,” which strives to reduce the amount of plastic. Flight HA864 departed Japan at 20:00 and arrived in Honolulu at 9:00 in the morning. (Hawaii is 19 hours behind Japan, so by the time you arrive in Honolulu, it will be 4:00 a.m. in Japan.) The cabin temperature is set rather low, too cold for some people. Blankets are provided for each passenger, but it is recommended that you bring a pair of blankets just in case. Next, we will finally visit a school excursion spot where you can experience the “deep” Hawaii! Continue to Part 2. Part 2 ・Visit the Battleship Missouri Memorial and Bishop Museum, which are exciting for adults!
