On August 17, a kick-off event for “Mongolia Open Innovation and Co-Creation for SDGs (MICS) 2023” was held in Ulaanbaatar. MICS is a program that supports a wide range of stakeholders in industry, government, and academia in Japan and Mongolia to bring together technologies, ideas, and funds to co-create innovative solutions and work collaboratively toward solving social issues and achieving the SDGs.
Applications were received from 390 organizations (500 participants) from both Japan and Mo, including startups and other companies, financial institutions, educational and research institutions, NGOs, and public hospitals. An online platform was created in advance of the event, where participants’ information and ideas were made public. On the day of the event, 50 organizations and individuals selected from among those who applied exhibited booths at the venue, and 8 organizations residing in Japan and the Mongolian region made presentations online. Afterwards, booth exhibitors, online participants, and 256 participants in attendance discussed co-creation of innovative solutions and collaboration for approximately 5 hours, and 91 collaborative project proposals were submitted.
The 10 collaborative projects selected as a result of the screening took part in the “Japan-Mongolia Business Forum 2023” (hosted by JICA, Ministry of Economy and Development, Mongolia-Japan Human Resources Development Center, Mongolian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Association of Returned Japanese Students) held the following day in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The 10 collaborative projects include projects in both countries. A total of 47 organizations, including companies, financial institutions, educational and research institutions, NGOs, and public hospitals, including startups from both countries, participated in these 10 collaborative projects.
Participants commented, “I was able to learn about issues in Mongolia and the organizations that are tackling them,” “It was a valuable opportunity to discuss issues with people from different organizations who share the same aspirations,” and “Next year, it would be good to invite more participants from Japan, as there are some common issues in rural Mongolia and Japan. I think it would be a good idea to invite more participants from Japan next year, as there are commonalities between Mongolian and Japanese local issues.
From September 2023 to February 2024, JICA plans to support 10 selected collaborative projects through mentoring and partial subsidies for travel expenses from Japan to Mongolia. In addition, JICA and the sponsor companies will provide partial support for the implementation costs of five of the selected collaborative projects. Through these activities, we will promote co-creation and collaboration to solve social issues and achieve the SDGs in Mongolia.
If you are interested in participating or cooperating in any of the 10 collaborative projects, please feel free to contact JICA Mongolia office at mg_oso_rep@jica.go.jp.
