On September 21, Japan Xreal started pre-orders for a new AR glasses model, XREAL Air 2, which will be shipped sequentially from October 16.
XREAL Air (formerly Nreal Air) is a glasses-type device that allows users to experience the world of AR/VR by connecting to a smartphone or other device. The XREAL Air 2, the second generation of this product, has recently been released in Japan.
The exterior is almost the same as the previous model, but it weighs about 72 g, about 10% lighter. A 0.55-inch OLED is used for the display, and a new optical engine (AetherXR 3.0) allows users to enjoy content with higher image quality, and the function to suppress sound leakage to the surroundings has been enhanced.
The previous model came in one color, but now there are two colors to choose from, dark gray and red, and accessories such as carrying pouches and cables are also available to match the color of the main unit.
Insert lenses are used when vision correction is necessary, such as for nearsightedness, but this part of the system remains compatible, and users of the previous model can continue to use it as is. The “Nebula for Windows/Mac” software, which is distributed as a beta version and can be connected to a PC to create a multi-screen environment, can also be used as before.
In the past, it was necessary to purchase an adapter (sold separately) to connect to the iPhone, but with the adoption of the USB Type-C port on the iPhone 15, it will be possible to connect without an adapter.
The price is 54,800 yen, and the first 1,000 customers will receive a pre-order bonus worth 5,000 yen. The rewards include an Apple Gift Card (worth 2,500 yen), XREAL Kaleido Kit-glasseskin (worth 1,500 yen), and a lens frame coupon (1,000 yen discount).
The company has also announced a higher-end model, the XREAL Air 2 Pro, which is equipped with an electronically controlled light control function that allows the transmittance of the sunglasses to be switched in three levels. This model will be priced at 61,980 yen and will be available for pre-order starting October 17.
The company has a booth in Hall 8 at Tokyo Game Show 2023, which is being held at Makuhari Messe from September 21 to 24, where demonstrations are being held to allow visitors to connect XREAL Air 2 to gaming devices and experience various games.
