Hoshino Resort’s “Kai” brand of onsen ryokan will open its first Miyagi Prefecture location, “Kai Akiu” (1 Yumoto Hirakura, Akiu-cho, Taihaku-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture), on April 25, 2024. In conjunction with this announcement, hotel reservations will begin today, October 12.
Akiu Onsen is a hot spring resort with a rich history, also known as “Sendai’s back seat,” where successive emperors and feudal lords, including Date Masamune, are said to have healed their bodies.
Overlooking the Natori River flowing from the Ou Mountains and taking advantage of its location to experience the changing seasons, the hotel has an open-air bath built of rocks, an indoor bath with its own hot spring, and a footbath terrace where visitors can enjoy the murmuring of the mountain stream.
There are 49 guest rooms, all of which have a view of the mountain stream. In addition to Japanese-style rooms of different sizes (for 2 to 4 persons), special rooms and dog rooms are also available.
Local elements are incorporated everywhere, such as the “Sendai glass” artwork on the room desk, which glows green in the light, the traditional Shiroishi washi paper used for room number tags, and the kokeshi paper pattern on the bedroom shoji screens.
In the evening, kaiseki cuisine is inspired by a feudal lord’s meal. Beef tail and Sendai miso rillette, and sashimi with seasonal seafood are served in a set meal with legs.
In the “Special Kaiseki” menu, guests can enjoy “Beef Yamakai Tawara Nabe,” which features beef wrapped in a “bale” shape with sea urchins, as well as local ingredients such as beef tongue and Japanese parsley, in keeping with Miyagi Prefecture’s reputation as a rice producer.
Accommodation prices range from 31,000 yen per night per person per room for two people, including dinner and breakfast.
