The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on October 18 in Islamabad for a grant of up to 794 million yen for the “Rehabilitation of Educational Facilities in Flood Affected Areas in Sindh Province. The agreement was signed by and among the governments of the Republic of Sindh and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
In Pakistan, one-third of the country’s land area was inundated or otherwise affected by floods caused by intermittent heavy rains from June to August 2022, with Sindh province in particular suffering the most extensive damage in the country. Approximately 27,000 schools across Pakistan were damaged, but the school facilities that JICA supported to build in Sindh between 2013 and 2019 were able to avoid serious damage because the floor height was set based on the inundation damage caused by the 2010 floods. As a result of the government of Pakistan’s recognition of our efforts and achievements in disaster mitigation, we were requested to rehabilitate a school that collapsed due to the 2022 floods.
