Posted on 2023-11-212023-11-21 by Editor in Chief

On April 19, JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka held an online meeting with President Alok Sharma of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to be held in November in the UK. At the beginning of the meeting, President Sharma explained the need to share the message of achieving carbon neutrality with the world and the steady implementation of the commitment to COP26. He also emphasized the need for climate change mitigation measures (efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions) as well as adaptation measures (efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change). Then, after expressing his condolences on the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh of the United Kingdom, President Kitaoka expressed his respect for the UK’s presidency of the G7 and COP26, and expressed his hope for UK leadership in solving global issues such as climate change. In the area of climate change countermeasures, I mentioned the launch of the “Japan-US Climate Partnership” at the Japan-US Summit held on April 16, and explained that JICA will engage in full dialogue with developing countries and provide the best possible cooperation, while following the policies of the Japanese government.

Chairman Sharma emphasized the importance of countries taking leadership and promoting private investment to move toward achieving carbon neutrality goals, and expressed his expectations for JICA and Japanese leadership, as well as the importance of financial cooperation and investment in the energy transition.

JICA will continue to support the transition to a decarbonized society and the creation of climate resilient societies in developing countries, in collaboration with donors and other diverse partners.
