The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on March 27 in Dhaka for the technical cooperation project “Capacity Enhancement Project for Special Economic Zone Management and Investment Promotion.
This project aims to improve the investment environment in SEZs by establishing an independent operational structure for the One-Stop Service Center (OSSC), which is in charge of receiving applications and granting permits for investment-related procedures at the headquarters of the Bangladesh SEZ Authority and in local SEZs, and by strengthening the capacity of the OSSC for managing SEZs and promoting investment. The goal is to improve the investment environment in SEZs. The provision of one-stop services and the introduction of a customs clearance system in SEZs are expected to contribute to the smooth investment and business operations of companies, including Japanese companies, that move into SEZs. In addition, the SEZs will contribute to Goal 8 (both job satisfaction and economic growth) and Goal 9 (create a foundation for industry and technological innovation) of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). JICA has been cooperating in the development of basic infrastructure in a special economic zone (Alai Hazar) in the suburbs of Dhaka through the Foreign Direct Investment Promotion Project, which is a yen loan.
