JR East will conduct a demonstration experiment of a free pass that can be used by touching a mobile Suica automatic ticket gate on the “Tabi-CONNECT” MaaS platform.
Unlike the free passes previously sold through Tabi-CONNECT, the pass allows users to enter and exit stations equipped with Suica-compatible ticket gates by simply touching their Mobile Suica. The Mobile Suica to be used must be registered on the website, and the pass must be purchased in advance with Suica SF balance or credit card (registration starts on December 1). Passes are for adults only and are valid only on the day of purchase.
The target MaaS services are “Izu navi” in the Izu area and “Hitachinokuni Kiko” in the Ibaraki area.
Izu navi” offers the “Ito-Izu-Kogen Digital Free Ticket” (1,000 yen), which allows unlimited travel between Ito Station and Izu-Kogen Station on the Izu Kyuko Line, from December 1 to January 31, 2024. The “Tokiwa Road Pass (Digital)” (2,180 yen), which allows unlimited travel on JR lines and private railways in Ibaraki Prefecture, will be sold on weekends and holidays from December 2 to December 24 and February 10 to March 31, 2024.
When using an automatic ticket checker, the fare for the section you boarded will be deducted from your balance, and the fare for the free section will be refunded at a later date. It is also possible to board a train from outside the free area and alight within the free area (and vice versa), in which case only the fare for the section within the area will be refunded. On the other hand, if a passenger does not stop at a stopover point within the free area but boards a train outside the free area or boards and alight outside the Tokyo metropolitan area Suica area, he/she will not be eligible for the cash refund.
Also, as mentioned above, the balance of the fare must be charged to Mobile Suica in advance for the section to be used. Cash refund may not be applied if you use a transit machine or a manned ticket counter to make an entry to the terminal. When using the “Tokiwa Pass (Digital)” between non-Suica stations and Suica-supported stations, passengers do not need to touch their Mobile Suica when getting on and off the train, but rather present their pass screen to the attendant for entry and exit.
