JR East will suspend service on some sections of the Yamanote Line all day due to station improvement work at Shibuya Station.
The outer route Osaki → Shibuya → Shinjuku → Ikebukuro will be suspended on November 18, and the inner route Ikebukuro → Shinjuku → Shibuya → Osaki will be suspended on November 19. Construction will be from the first to the last train on both days (52 hours in total). Please note that the number of trains outside the section will also be reduced, so please check the operation information in advance of your weekend trip.
If you wish to use the Ikebukuro-Osaki line during the suspension, it is recommended to use the Saikyo Line or the Shonan Shinjuku Line (or take the Yamanote Line making a large detour to the Tokyo Station side).
If you have a ticket, commuter pass, or coupon ticket for the suspended section, you will be able to transfer to the Tokyo Metro (all lines), Toei Subway (all lines), Rinkai Line (all lines), etc.
On the morning of the 18th, the first day of construction, the site was opened to the press. The line switching has been carried out four times in the past, and this will be the fifth and final phase of the work.
The Saikyo Line platform has been relocated and the Yamanote Line inner and outer platforms have been made the same, and the current work is intended to raise the height of the tracks and platforms and secure the ceiling height of the east-west free passageway under the tracks. The current passageway is 2.1 m at its lowest point, but the final ceiling height will be 2.6 m or higher.
The two-day work will cover an area of approximately 330 m, centered on the Yamanote Line inner and outer platforms, and will raise the height of the tracks by a maximum of 22 cm. The maximum height will be raised by a maximum of 30 cm during the previous work, 22 cm this time, and 41 cm during the normal work in the future, for a total height increase of up to 93 cm.
In addition, the Shinjuku side of the platform will be extended by approximately 26 m to change the stopping position of the cars to be closer to Shinjuku (by about one car), and the Osaki side will be converted to a walkway for approximately 25 m. The Osaki side will be converted to a 25-meter walkway. This will allow for the construction of elevating facilities (stairs, etc.) that will connect to the Hachiko and Kokudo South Exit ticket gates.
The center of the platform is partitioned by a fence, with one side as the construction area and the other side as the business area where trains and passengers enter, and the two sides are reversed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Therefore, a total of approximately 4,600 JR employees and workers will be working on both days. There will be one maintenance vehicle for transporting and spreading ballast, and about 17 rail cars that can travel on the tracks, including dump trucks, overhead wire trucks, and uniques (cranes).
