Construction of the Shibuya Sakura Stage complex, which is being promoted by Tokyu Land Corporation and the Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka Exit Urban Area Redevelopment Association, will be completed on November 30. The “opening event” will be held on July 26, 2024, when most of the buildings will be completed.
The newly constructed urban planning road (Auxiliary Line Street No. 18) running through the facility to the west toward Ebisu Station is called “SAKURA Street.” It has a very bright atmosphere with a series of facades designed with a pink cherry blossom pattern with movement on the lower floors and cherry blossom trees planted along the street. It is likely to be familiar to many people as the new Shibuya Station area street. Two decks, one on the second floor and the other on the third floor, will be built above the road to allow traffic to come and go. The road will be in service on December 1.
The building is located in a vast area of approximately 254,830 m2, and consists of the A block (SHIBUYA side, 39 floors above ground and 4 floors below ground), the B block (SAKURA side, 39 floors above ground and 4 floors below ground), and the C block (SAKURA side). The building will be located in a large area of approximately 254,830m2 in area. (29 floors above ground, 2 floors below ground), and the C section (Naka-Shibuya Church of Christ in Japan, 4 floors above ground). All of these areas are connected by a deck. This deck and an escalator called “Urban Core” will allow pedestrians to circulate without being divided by surrounding elevation differences, railroad tracks, or roads.
Located adjacent to Shibuya Station and the JR line, and across Route 246 from Shibuya Fukuras, Shibuya Scramble Square (East Building), and Shibuya Stream, Shibuya Sakura Stage will be a new landmark complex at the west exit of Shibuya Station.
Tokyu Land Corporation President Hoshino: “The last piece of the puzzle in the central district of Shibuya Station. We will eliminate the division of the city.”
At the completion press conference, Mr. Hiroaki Hoshino, President and Representative Director of Tokyu Land Corporation, gave a speech on the completion of the project and explained the history and outline of the development. This marks the end of the once-in-a-century large-scale redevelopment project in Shibuya, the site of the Tokyu Group’s founding.
The Shibuya Sakura Stage will be completed on November 30, 2023, with the wishes of 120 local residents and the desire for the development of the area. It will be the last piece of the Shibuya Station central district (President Hoshino),” declared the facility’s completion. Already completed are Shibuya Hikarie in 2012, Shibuya Stream in 2018, and the first phase of Shibuya Scramble Square and Shibuya Fuclas in 2019.
As you know, the area around Shibuya Station is valley-shaped, and the Sakuragaoka area here is also a district with a very large difference in elevation. It was the long-cherished wish of the local people for the development to eliminate the division of the city and to overcome the valley shape. We will proceed with the development of the Urban Core, a longitudinal movement conduit connecting underground to above ground, and by passing two decks that safely cross over the urban planning road, and by constructing a new passageway, we will realize the connection of Shibuya Street and also eliminate the division caused by the railroad. Facilities such as a green relaxation plaza and a lively plaza, which have never existed around the station before, are being established,” he explained.
Shibuya Sakura Stage will be home to 10,000 workers. We would like to use the completion of Shibuya Sakura Stage as a catalyst to further accelerate the virtuous cycle of liveliness in which people with diverse sensibilities gather in Shibuya, naturally giving birth to outstanding culture and content businesses. We hope to further enhance the power and attractiveness of the Shibuya area, and to increase the international process presence of Tokyo as a city, with the development of Shibuya playing a role in the growth of the Japanese economy. We hope that you will continue to pay attention to Shibuya as it continues to develop,” he concluded.
Mr. Yasuhiro Kurokawa, executive officer and general manager of the Shibuya Development Division of Tokyu Land Corporation’s Urban Business Unit, then took the podium to explain the details of the facility, which will open sequentially after its completion on November 30. The opening event will be held on July 26, 2024, in cooperation with the local government and surrounding businesses. The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will be held on the same day, and Olympic-related events are also being considered.
The commercial facilities will house approximately 100 stores in total, with 40% of the tenants being experiential tenants. There are no tenants that simply display and sell clothes. In the Sakuragaoka area, there has always been a local culture of enjoying hobbies. We think it is important to have an interactive store where people can go to a place and actually experience and enjoy it. By linking event space and signage, we will provide a next-generation experience that goes beyond the confines of the store and crosses real and digital worlds. We have already signed contracts for all of our retail space, and all tenants will be open by the time of the event in July 2024. The specific tenants have not been announced and will be announced in the future.
Since the opening, we will continue our efforts to create a lively atmosphere. We will continue our efforts to promote urban development in the greater Shibuya area (the Tokyu Group has positioned Shibuya as an important center for urban development as “Greater SHIBUYA”) with a diverse range of people and companies from other industries, and we will create new experiences and businesses in the town. We would like to create a virtuous cycle in which new experiences and businesses are created in the city and communicated to gain the sympathy of people around the world, which in turn attracts more diverse people and businesses that share the same feelings.
Nigiwai STAGE” will be created on the 3rd floor deck connecting the “SHIBUYA side” and the “SAKURA side” on the south side. The cloud-shaped element in the center of the plaza, which resembles a water basin or cherry blossom tree, will be used to create light, sound, and mist showers, and kitchen cars and a stage will be used to hold events.
FLOWPLANTEAUX will be the production planner for this element. Sensors will be used to create different spatial effects 365 days a year by utilizing human flow, sound, weather data, etc., and 1,200 small lights will be used to illuminate the space. For example, the lighting will change with the sound of passing trains and rainfall.
The “Urban Core” is an escalator that vertically (vertical axis) connects the second basement to the third floor above ground at “SAKURA Tower. The West Exit National Highway underground passageway directly connects the second basement level to Shibuya Station. The second floor of the existing pedestrian bridge deck will also be connected, and the third floor will be connected to the new JR ticket gate by the newly constructed “North Free Passage” (tentative name). Once all these passages are completed, it will be much easier to move between stations and across Route 246.
Near the “Tokimeki STAGE” and the “North Free Passage” is the multi-functional event space “BLOOM GATE,” which is directly connected to the “Tokimeki STAGE” and the “North Free Passage,” where events and promotions will be held in three zones, A to C. Large LED visions are installed in zones A and B, which will strongly appeal to the flow of people.
Office floors are offered in all buildings, and “SHIBUYA Tower” has an L-shape with a standard floor area of approximately 2,780m2. Most of the tenants have already decided to move in, and many of them are IT and entertainment companies. On the 38th floor, the top floor, “manoma,” a startup support facility that can be used as a dining room and lounge bar, will be available for business meetings and presentations. It is expected to become a place for startup companies to support and interact with each other.
The world’s first indie game base “404 NOT FOUND” will be opened on the 4th floor of “SHIBUYA TOWER”. The center will support game creators’ production, PR activities, and exchanges through a wide variety of events.
