The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) on December 4, 2012, in Panama City, Panama, on the technical cooperation project “Capacity Building for TOD Planning along Metro Line No. 3” with Metro Panama and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The project is a technical cooperation project.
(Note) TOD (Transit Oriented Development, or public transportation oriented development) is development in which land use and transportation are integrated around transportation nodes and a variety of land uses are developed in medium to high density, including residential areas.
The province of West Panama (population of approximately 520,000), located in the western region of the metropolitan area, is experiencing rapid population growth and is projected to reach 1 million by 2040. In the main target area, the city of Araijan in West Panama Province, detached (low-rise and low population density) residential development targeting families is progressing sprawlingly, while the public transportation system is not being developed.
