Conference Title: Ukraine Restoration and Reconstruction Needs Briefing

Date: Thursday, November 30

Organized by JICA (Supported by JETRO)

Location: JICA Headquarters (Takebashi)

Main Participants

Approximately 500 participants from 250 organizations, mainly trading companies, manufacturers, and consultants, but also including research institutes and economic-related organizations (in a hybrid face-to-face and online format)

Background and Objectives

Since the outbreak of war in February 2022, JICA has been providing emergency response, rehabilitation, and reconstruction assistance to Ukraine through financial assistance, grant assistance, and technical assistance including surveys. The development of Ukraine’s private sector and the participation and investment of foreign companies are becoming increasingly important to achieve full-scale reconstruction and rehabilitation and sustainable development.

In this connection, JICA held this briefing session to provide an opportunity to share information on the situation and needs of each sector in Ukraine, which JICA has gained through its past cooperation, and to discuss how Japanese private companies can apply their technologies and services to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Ukraine and link them to future business opportunities. The briefing session was held to provide an opportunity to share information on the situation and needs of each sector in Ukraine, which JICA has gained through its cooperation to date.

Contents

At the briefing, the overall picture of Ukraine’s assistance and the damage situation and needs for recovery and reconstruction in each sector (agriculture, infrastructure and debris disposal, education, health, landmine and UXO countermeasures, etc.) were presented, and the Ukrainian Entrepreneurship and Export Promotion Agency gave an explanation of Ukraine’s economic situation and expressed hope for Japanese investment. The Ukrainian Entrepreneurship and Export Promotion Agency also made a speech.

JICA also introduced the following proposals for new public-private partnerships in the future: (1) a proposal for a policy on private sector partnership projects for Ukraine, (2) a proposal for a pre-event for the Japan-Ukraine Economic Recovery Promotion Conference, and (3) a proposal for human resource development (in Japan) for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine (donation project). The participants also called for active cooperation from Japanese companies.

(For more information, please refer to the following document.)

A total of approximately 500 people from about 250 companies participated in this briefing session (both in person and online), which once again showed the high level of interest of Japanese companies in Ukraine.
