On December 11, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic for up to 1,087 million yen for the “Equipment Improvement Program for Operation and Maintenance of Irrigation Canals”.
In Kyrgyzstan, where water resources from snowmelt from the Tien Shan Mountains and other mountainous regions are abundant, irrigation systems cover a wide area of farmland throughout the country. However, most of the irrigation canals that support agriculture in Kyrgyzstan were constructed in the former Soviet Union and have deteriorated over time, making their maintenance and management a major challenge. Since the equipment for maintaining and managing irrigation canals was also introduced around the same time, there are concerns that inefficient maintenance of canals due to aging equipment will have a tremendous impact on agricultural production.
This project will upgrade the aging irrigation canal maintenance equipment owned by the Department of Water Resources to achieve appropriate, efficient, and effective maintenance and management of the canal, thereby contributing to efficient use of water resources and improving agricultural productivity in Kyrgyzstan, thereby contributing to SDG Goal 2 (zero hunger).
