The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh for the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Expansion Project (Phase III) in Dhaka on December 24, 2012, for an amount up to 76.6 billion yen (35 million USD). The project is located in Bangladesh. This project is to construct a new international passenger terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (hereinafter referred to as “Dhaka International Airport”), the capital airport of Bangladesh, and to construct a new international passenger terminal at Dhaka International Airport (hereinafter referred to as “Dhaka International Airport”). The project aims to expand the capacity, convenience, and safety of the airport by constructing a new international passenger terminal and a cargo terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (“Dhaka International Airport”), the capital airport of Bangladesh, to meet the rapidly growing airline demand. As Bangladesh’s economy grows at an average annual rate of 6%, airline demand is expanding at an average annual rate of 8%, and the number of international passengers at Dhaka International Airport will reach a record high of 7.92 million in 2022. The terminal’s annual passenger throughput is approaching its upper limit of approximately 8 million passengers, and passenger volume is projected to continue to grow in line with economic growth. In addition, the annual volume of air cargo handled at the airport has already reached its maximum capacity of approximately 330,000 tons by 2021, and further growth in cargo is also expected in the future.

This project will contribute to the promotion of Bangladesh’s economic growth by enabling the efficient movement of people and goods through the expansion of the capital airport, which is a key infrastructure supporting the country’s rapidly growing social economy, and will also contribute to SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Goal 9 (Create a foundation for industrial and technological innovation).
