Background and Objectives
The Fukuoka Method, a treatment method for final landfills that is attracting attention as one of the measures to reduce methane gas emissions in waste management, was discussed from various perspectives, including specific examples of introduction and possible financial support schemes for introducing the method. JICA, in collaboration with JICA’s Global Agenda (GA) and the Japanese government’s initiatives for inter-city cooperation, discussed the usefulness of the Fukuoka method in developing countries and the importance of human resource development, and deepened the discussion.

JICA’s Akihiro Miyazaki, Deputy Director General of the Global Environment Department and Head of the Environmental Management and Climate Change Group, participated in the panel discussion. Akihiro Miyazaki, Deputy Director General of the Global Environment Department and Director of the Environmental Management and Climate Change Group, JICA, participated in the panel discussion and spoke about the Fukuoka Method’s potential as a solution to the problems faced by developing countries, the importance of human resource development in improving waste management, JICA’s Clean City Initiative, the environment, and the Fukuoka Method’s potential as a solution to the problems faced by developing countries. He also stated that the Fukuoka Method can be one of the solutions to solve the problems faced by developing countries, that human resource development is the most important factor to improve waste management, and that he will continue to work with various resources in Japan and other development partners to improve waste management capacity in developing countries based on the Clean City Initiative and the Clean City Partnership Program (C2P2) promoted together with the Ministry of the Environment.
