Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Sharaku, and more! The Honolulu Museum of Art is located about 20 minutes by car or bus from the center of Waikiki, and is the largest art museum in Hawaii. This was my first visit to the museum, and I was surprised to find that the exhibits were much more impressive than I had expected. With a beautiful courtyard where you can look around forever and a café where you can relax, it has become one of my favorite places in Honolulu. The Honolulu Museum of Art’s galleries are divided into Western art on the right side of the building and Eastern art on the left. The permanent collection consists of more than 50,000 works, including European paintings, Asian art, African textiles, and many other types of art. Visitors can see works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Matisse, and other masters of painting familiar to the Japanese. The collection of Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e, is one of the best in the United States, and the museum boasts the world’s largest collection of Hiroshige Utagawa’s works. The Honolulu Museum of Art is highly recommended for those who want to enjoy Hawaii in a different way than just going to the beach or shopping. If you are an art lover, you will definitely be satisfied with this spot.
