JR Kyushu will reopen Kirishima Jingu Station on the Nippo Main Line on March 22. An opening ceremony and marché will be held on the day.
The renewal of the station is part of the “Kyushu DREAM STATION” project, which aims to create a bustling atmosphere at the station and in the local community, and was undertaken jointly with IFOO, a Nigiwai partner.
The renovated station was designed using almost 100% cedar wood from Kagoshima Prefecture, and a 4-meter-high sacred tree cut from the Kagoshima University Faculty of Agriculture training forest was installed as a symbol to create an interior suitable for the station nearest Kirishima Shrine, which is designated as a national important cultural property.
A project called “Korai” is also underway to renovate the area surrounding the station. As the first phase of the project, a stone warehouse and an underutilized warehouse adjacent to the station will be converted into a restaurant, bar, and gallery, which will open on the same day.
