JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Sardor Umurzakov at JICA headquarters on April 22.
The two parties exchanged views on past cooperation between Japan and Uzbekistan and future prospects, mentioning, among other things, the meeting with then President Kitaoka during the visit of President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan to Japan in December 2019.
Referring to the relationship of trust that has been built with Uzbekistan, President Tanaka conveyed that Uzbekistan is an important partner for Japan. He also expressed his belief that cooperation in areas such as job creation, investment promotion, healthcare, and infrastructure development will become even more important in light of the impact of crises facing the international community, such as the new coronavirus infection. He also expressed his desire to contribute to the stability and development of Uzbekistan by strengthening Japan-Uzbekistan relations through education-related personnel exchanges and other activities.
Deputy Prime Minister Umurzakov noted the importance of cooperation on employment stability and economic growth, and stated that the Horticultural Crops Value Chain Enhancement Project agreed to by the two countries in December 2019 has promoted agriculture in Uzbekistan, strengthened export capacity, and created jobs in rural areas. He also expressed appreciation for JICA’s cooperation in human resource development through study abroad and training programs, and expressed hope for cooperation in the areas of electricity, including renewable energy, and agriculture, including horticulture and livestock production, which create employment, as well as in industrial human resource development. He also expressed his interest in further development of the country through Japan’s knowledge in the field of health and medical care.
JICA will continue to provide multifaceted cooperation to Uzbekistan, combining human resource development and infrastructure development to promote economic growth and social development.
