On February 26, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Tunisia in Tunis for a grant of up to 3,208 million yen for the “Advanced Sewage Treatment Plant Construction Project in Gabes”. Tunisia is facing water shortages, partly due to climate change in recent years. The southern part of the country, including Gabes, is located in a semi-arid region with low average annual precipitation, and the supply and demand of water is tight. In addition, 90% of the country’s groundwater is highly saline, making it unusable for industrial use, which is one of the challenges for industrial development in the region. Signing ceremony

This project is to construct a new advanced sewage treatment plant on the site of an existing sewage treatment plant in Gabes, southern Tunisia, and to operate, maintain, and manage the facility efficiently. This will enable the stable reuse of sewage water for industrial use and contribute to the improvement of living conditions in Tunisia to correct regional disparities through the conservation of water resources, thereby contributing to SDG Goal 6 (provide safe water and toilets worldwide) and Goal 13 (take concrete measures against climate change). The project will contribute to SDG Goal 6 (safe water and toilets worldwide) and Goal 13 (concrete measures against climate change). In addition, this project will be implemented as a Grant Aid for Project and Management Rights (*). The private sector will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facilities for a certain period of time, and it is expected that the know-how of the private sector will be utilized.

(*) Grant Aid for Project and Operation Rights is intended to promote the acquisition of project and operation rights by Japanese companies and to utilize Japan’s excellent technologies and know-how for the development of developing countries by providing grant aid for public projects in which private companies are involved and comprehensively implement everything from facility construction to operation, maintenance, and management.
