The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Yen Loan Agreement (L/A) with the government of the Dominican Republic on April 16 in Santo Domingo, the capital of the country, for up to 6.66 billion yen for the “Integrated Solid Waste Management Improvement Project.
The Duquesa Landfill, located in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is a huge landfill that handles all of the waste in the metropolitan area, but due to lack of proper management, it causes foul odors, soil contamination, and large fires caused by ignition of gases generated from the waste. Air pollution and health hazards have been confirmed in the Tokyo metropolitan area due to smoke and odors.
This project will provide in-situ maintenance for proper disposal of waste at the Duquesa Landfill, the only final disposal site in the Special District of Santo Domingo, the capital of the country. In addition, the project will provide various types of assistance such as job training to those who will be economically affected by the project, such as west pickers who will no longer be able to collect waste materials. The support is planned in a gender-sensitive manner, and will contribute to Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality), Goal 11 (Create livable communities), and Goal 13 (Take concrete measures against climate change) of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through this project.
