JR Tokai will introduce VR training simulators for on-platform staff of the Tokaido Shinkansen. The simulator will be deployed at all 17 Shinkansen stations to increase the frequency of training, and is expected to be used in conference rooms and other locations.
The VR simulator displays realistic images of station platforms. It is possible to switch between scenes with and without platform fences, weather conditions, day and night, and other abnormal situations such as running into a train, getting caught in a door, or falling onto a platform. The system allows the instructor to manipulate the content of the events according to the trainee’s needs, and is expected to provide effective training that takes into account the trainee’s characteristics and strengthens the trainee’s ability to respond to unusual situations in which he or she has little experience.
