During Golden Week, Waikiki saw more Japanese tourists than usual. I was often tempted to say to a family standing on the street looking at their phone, “That restaurant has a great happy hour and great prices! I was often tempted to say something like, “That restaurant has a great happy hour and great prices! Because I have come to know this restaurant. ……
Bluefish Japanese Restaurant from Texas. This dining room offers a wide variety of creative cuisine with a focus on Japanese and Korean dishes such as sushi and sashimi. It landed in Hawaii for the first time in November 2023, over 25 years after its establishment. Located on the 2nd floor of Waikiki Beach Walk, a shopping complex on the west side of Waikiki.
While located along a touristy street, the restaurant is on the second floor, so even with outdoor seating, you can enjoy a relaxing meal away from the hustle and bustle, as shown in this photo (still little known ……).
For happy hour, they offer $1 sake because “we wanted to provide a service that no other restaurant offers. I wondered what kind of sake it would be, but it was Matsu Take Ume sake, which was delicious and very satisfying. Other prices include Japanese draft beer, wine by the glass, and sparkling wine for $5, a rarity in today’s Waikiki restaurants. All cocktails are $3 off.
Most dishes are $10 or less. For example, a shishito pepper with a huge pile of shishito peppers is $8. Edamame is $5, truffle fries (French fries) are $8, and Korean chicken wings are $10 (five). Beer drinkers should try the $15 bulgogi French fries. It was a novel menu item with a donut of prokogi on french fries, and was too much to eat.
Must order is the signature menu item, the Bluefish Tower. It is $29.50 for dinner, but during happy hour it is half price at $15. Avocado, crab, and tuna on a bed of sushi rice, served with wasabi cream sauce and caviar. And they go out of their way to give you a fun performance at your table. I laughed a bit at the unique idea of mashing the sashimi to break up the tower.
In the past, black food was frowned upon in the U.S. (or so the story goes), so for a roll that is uniquely American, wrap seaweed inside and roll it up with rice, try the Red Sun Roll. Choose from two different ingredients such as salmon avocado, spicy tuna, or hamachi for $19 (12 rolls of 6 pieces each).
The outside seating overlooking the street is nice and open, but the restaurant, with a total of 200 seats, is also spacious. It has a sushi counter, so there are couples who enjoy sitting at the counter and having their sushi made in front of them, families who dine at tables, and many other seating options.
So far, I have not seen any Japanese people in this restaurant, so I can definitely enjoy the Asian cuisine that America represents while feeling like a foreign country. The people at the restaurant are friendly and comfortable, and I would definitely go back. Happy hour is from 3pm to 6pm, and they also offer a late night happy hour from 9pm to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The hours are subject to change, so be sure to check before you go.
