Expedia announced new products and features at the EXPLORE partner event in Las Vegas, NV.
The new product, Romie, is an AI assistant that combines the roles of travel agent, concierge, and personal assistant to help users plan, shop, book, and even make unexpected changes during their trip. It is a learning AI that learns the user’s personal preferences, such as food preferences and types, hotel types, and activities.
By inviting Romie to join a group chat via SMS and sending her a mentions, she can receive suggestions on destinations and activities as if she were talking to a travel agent. Smart Search, which summarizes chat content and incorporates relevant travel information into reservations on Expedia, is also available. The company also monitors weather changes, transportation disruptions, and other factors that may affect a user’s travel plans and can prepare alternative plans.
In addition, the itinerary is updated in real time, so those in the group chat can know the status of the traveler. This allows, for example, Romie to check the estimated time of arrival when picking up a distant acquaintance at the airport.
Romie is currently available in an alpha version at EG Labs, a program where new Expedia apps (iOS) can be tested in the US.
He also announced several new services added within the Expedia app.
