IHG Hotels & Resorts announced on May 16 that the ANA Holiday Inn Resort Karuizawa (2032-16 Kita-Karuizawa, Naganohara-cho, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture) will open in the first quarter of 2025.
It will be the first hotel in Japan to open under a management contract with Kajima Corporation (Kajima has a track record overseas in Bangkok), and will renovate and rebrand the existing “President Resort Karuizawa” owned by Kajima.
Located overlooking the foot of Mt. Asama, about 40 minutes from Karuizawa Station by car, the resort features an 18-hole golf course and a ski slope with four slopes, with a total site area of 2,452,214 m2 and total floor space of 11,430 m2. Ancillary facilities include a restaurant, natural hot spring, gymnasium, and indoor swimming pool.
IHG established a joint venture with ANA in 2006 (IHG-ANA Hotels Group Japan, LLC), which has opened 47 hotels with 13,731 rooms in Japan and plans to open 14 more with 2,386 rooms, ANA Holiday Inn Resort Karuizawa is the second hotel to open in the Karuizawa area, following Hotel Indigo Karuizawa.
Mr. Abhijay Sandilia, Managing Director, Japan & Micronesia, IHG Hotels & Resorts, who gave an overview of the facility at the presentation, spoke about the current inbound situation in Japan, saying that although there are voices of overtourism, compared to regions such as France and Germany, which have 60 or 80 million visitors per year, the inbound market has just begun. He expressed his belief that, despite the impact of the exchange rate, “people are not coming to Japan because of the weak yen, but because Japan itself is attractive.
