Background and Objectives
In 2024, the 70th anniversary of international cooperation, we will share the history and current status of ODA and the values of “co-creation” and “circular flow” that are important for future ODA with people involved in development cooperation in developing countries and Japan, and discuss the future of Japanese development cooperation.
Contents
The symposium was attended by many people from the worlds of politics, business, and academia, as well as by practitioners of international cooperation who work with JICA on a daily basis. In addition, many students, the future leaders of development cooperation, also attended the symposium, making it a fitting event for the 70th anniversary of international cooperation with a total of approximately 140 participants.
After the opening address by President Tanaka (https://www.jica.go.jp/about/president/speech/20240515.html), Mr. Obuchi, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the JICA Parliamentary Assembly, gave a speech. Based on his experience of observing numerous JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in the field since his first year in office, Mr. Obuchi stated that “Japan’s development cooperation is the accumulation of trust over 70 years of thinking, working, and sweating together,” and expressed his hope for further development of development cooperation.
This was followed by a video message from Foreign Minister Uekawa on the 70th anniversary of international cooperation.
This was followed by a discussion titled “Future Development Cooperation through Co-Creation” by five panelists. The panelists, from the different perspectives of Jordan as a partner country and local governments in Japan, discussed the characteristics of Japan’s international cooperation to date and proposals for future co-creation, as well as co-creation proposals based on their experiences in the field as overseas cooperation volunteers and their subsequent establishment of NPOs, and the potential for impact investment and mobilization of new private-sector funds. The discussion was full of suggestions from a variety of perspectives, including the possibility of impact investment and the mobilization of new private-sector funds.
JICA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to plan events themed around the 70th anniversary of international cooperation throughout this year. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of international cooperation, we would like to take this opportunity not only to look back on our history, but also to discuss and develop Japan’s international cooperation in the future.
