The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Western Africa Power Pool* on May 28 in Abome-Calabi-Benin on the technical cooperation project “Strengthening Regional Collaboration to Promote the Western Africa Power Pool. The Western Africa region covers an area of about 4.5 million square kilometers. The Western Africa region has a population of about 440 million, and Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire are supporting the region’s electricity supply by supplying electricity to the region through the Western Africa Power Pool (WAPP). As demand for electricity in the region continues to grow, it is essential for WAPP to develop human resources and strengthen its capacity in order to achieve stable power supply over the long term through the full-scale operation of the wide-area grid and market. This project will contribute to the promotion of stable access to clean and affordable electricity in the Western African region by strengthening the capacity of electricity companies in 14 WAPP member countries to operate wide-area grids and electricity markets through the Western Africa Power Pool (WAPP), whose secretariat is located in Benin. Through these collaborations, we will contribute to SDG Goal 7 (Make energy clean for all), Goal 13 (Take concrete action on climate change), and Goal 17 (Achieve our goals through partnerships).
The West African Power Pool (WAPP) is an organization established by representatives of power companies in West Africa with the vision of providing a regular and reliable energy supply at competitive costs to the citizens of the West African region over the medium to long term by creating a unified regional electricity market. The member countries are the Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, Republic of the Gambia, Republic of Ghana, Republic of Guinea, Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Republic of Liberia, Republic of Mali, Republic of Niger, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Republic of Senegal, Republic of Sierra Leone and Republic of Togo.
