PUMA “Palermo”, terrace style sneaker that creates individuality through materials and colors

Posted on 2024-07-102024-09-06 by Editor in Chief

On July 10, PUMA Japan held a press preview of its products for fall/winter 2024, where Hyosuke Nozaki, Brand Communication Manager, Marketing Division, explained the PALERMO series.

The low-cut shoes worn by supporters gathered on the terraces of soccer stadiums (standing-room-only seats behind the goal) were called “terrace style,” and Palermo became a representative model of this style. The terrace style was fused with the pop culture of the youth of the time, such as fashion and music, and became widespread, but in recent years, it has come back into the spotlight because its clean silhouette matches contemporary fashion.

According to Nozaki, the original Palermo was called a phantom shoe because it was manufactured for only about a year in the 1980s, but the company will release a reissued model in 2020. Since then, they have been available since 2023, utilizing a variety of materials such as leather, suede, and nylon, while adding the individuality of a rich color variation.

For this fall/winter season, the unisex “Palermo Vintage” will be available in new colors, and a women’s medium-heavy-soled “Palermo MODA Vintage” model will also be introduced. Priced at 14,300 yen each.

Mr. Nozaki said, “Palermo (which has a wide range of variations) has the fun of allowing you to choose your favorite color and wear it at any time you like. Puma’s seasonal colors other than the standard colors are never reprinted and are only made once. Some of them are only available if you buy them at that time, but you may happen to find your favorite at an outlet at the end of the season,” he said, explaining that the uniqueness of this model is that it can produce such encounters.

For this press preview, the brand collaborated with Bunka Fashion Graduate University to present 11 different Palermo vintage coordinates using the students’ personal outfits under the theme of “Bloke core / Blokette core” styling. Mr. Nozaki said, “Palermo is a shoe that doesn’t have to be worn this way. It’s a shoe with deep pockets, so it goes with any outfit.
