Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for damage caused by Hurricane Beryl in Jamaica have been delivered to the country.
The emergency relief supplies to be provided to Jamaica arrived in the capital, Kingston, on Monday, July 15. At 17:00 (local time) on the same day, a ceremony was held at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence, attended by Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kamina Johnson-Smith, Minister of Local Government and Development, Desmond McKenzie, Minister of Information, Donna Morris Dickson, and Director of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Richard Thomson, and from Japan, Yasuhiro Atsumi, Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Yasuhiro Atsumi, Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica, and Mitsuyoshi Kawasaki, Director of JICA’s Jamaica Branch Office.
At the handover ceremony, Ambassador Atsumi expressed his honor to support Jamaica on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the JJ (Japan Jamaica) partnership and his hope that the damage from the hurricane would be contained as soon as possible.
In response, Minister for Local Government and Development Mackenzie and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Johnson-Smith expressed their deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt assistance, and said that they were pleased that Japan’s support had reached beyond the physical distance between the two countries, and that these emergency relief supplies would be used to help thousands of people affected by the disaster. He also stated that these emergency relief supplies will be used to help thousands of people affected by the disaster. He also stated that the digital radio communication system provided by the “Emergency Communication System Improvement Plan” (to be delivered in April 2024), a grant aid program implemented by JICA during the hurricane, was extremely useful for prompt and accurate information transmission at the time of the disaster.
