NEXCO East Japan and AirX have launched a “Helicopter Tour Plan” using Chojabaru SA (uphill) on the Tohoku Expressway as the takeoff and landing point. Applications can be made through the official AirX website.
This flight is the first helicopter tour plan in Japan to use an expressway SA as a takeoff and landing site, and will be launched in 2023. This time, the “Matsushima Course, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan” has been newly added, and a total of five courses will be offered, including the “Reconstruction Course” to learn about the current status of the Sanriku Coastal Highway, which was opened as a reconstruction road after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
NEXCO East Japan held a regular press conference at its headquarters in Kasumigaseki, Tokyo, on July 31 to explain this initiative. According to Sachiko Segawa, Senior Manager of the New Business Promotion Department of the company’s Service Area and New Business Division, the service is being used by a wide range of people, including those celebrating anniversaries such as employment, wedding anniversaries, and birthdays, stopping to board during expressway trips to Tohoku, and viewing their homes from above, which they normally cannot see.
He continued, “Through this flight, we hope that many customers will learn about the charms of the Tohoku region, including the rich and beautiful nature of Miyagi Prefecture and the variety of towns, including reconstruction areas, and that this will lead to the promotion of tourism in the wider Tohoku region.
