GoPro announced the new GoPro HERO13 Black and GoPro HERO action cam models on September 4; the GoPro HERO13 Black will be available on September 10 and the GoPro HERO on September 22.
The HERO13 Black is a legitimate evolution of the HERO13 Black, with a setting-linked auto-detection lens, magnetic mount, new battery, and more.
The GoPro HERO13 Black is a mainstream model that follows the body shape from the HERO9, and while the sensor size and internal engine, including image stabilization, have not changed from the HERO12, it is a full-featured model that has reached the highest point with the current body shape with minor improvements. The HERO12 is a main stream camera with the same sensor size and built-in engine.
The unit is priced at $399 (retail price in Japan is around 68,800 yen).
The most significant topic is the availability of four “HB series lenses. These include the “Ultra Wide Angle Lens Modular,” which is equivalent to the existing Max Lens Mod 2.0; the “ND Filter 4-Pack,” a light-reducing filter that controls exposure and produces motion blur effects; the “Macro Lens Modular,” which enables close-up photography; the “Anamorphic Lens Modular,” which supports a 21:9 aspect ratio for movie shooting; and the ” Anamorphic Lens Modular, which supports a 21:9 aspect ratio for cinematography.
All of them support HyperSmooth image stabilization, have a scratch-resistant water-repellent coating, and, most notably, “automatically detect the lens attached” by GoPro itself. For example, ND filters have been available from third-party manufacturers for some time, but they require manual setting of shutter speeds and other parameters depending on the amount of light reduction, such as ND4 to ND32.
However, the official GoPro lenses that are now available have embedded sensors, so the HERO13 Black automatically recognizes the type of lens attached and applies the optimal settings. The resolution, frame rate, and Protune settings can be selected according to the lens installed.
In addition, the battery has been redesigned to improve operating time. By increasing the capacity from 1720 mAh to 1900 mAh, it is now possible to shoot for more than 2.5 hours (when shooting 1080p30). However, the battery itself and contact shape have been changed, so it is not compatible with previous products (one more contact has been added).
Another topic in terms of improved operating time is the inclusion of a heat sink on the front of the main unit.
The mount is fresh from the HERO12 Black, which supported 1/4 thread in addition to the traditional fingers, and now has a magnet built into the base of the mount. The new mount has a magnet built into the base of the mount, which, when combined with the “magnetic latch mount” ($24.99), allows for quick attachment and detachment. The new magnetic latch mount ($24.99) allows for quick attachment and removal, catching up with the magnetic mounts that other action cam manufacturers have already introduced.
There are often situations in which the GoPro is removed for reasons such as battery replacement after the angle of view has been set using the mount, but the new magnetic system makes it easier to attach and remove the GoPro without disrupting the angle of view that has been set.
Finally, we would like to introduce another unique accessory, the “Contacto Magnetic Door + Power Cable Kit” ($79.99). This kit allows charging (power supply) without opening the door by replacing the side door with a magnetic waterproof contact, which is IPX7 compliant and waterproof to 10 meters, creating a variety of usage scenarios.
