On September 6, a preliminary opening ceremony was held for “Grand Green Osaka,” the second phase of the Umekita area, a large-scale redevelopment project on the north side of JR Osaka Station. Utilizing the site of the former Umeda Freight Station, which was called “the last prime site in Kansai,” nine joint venture developers led by Mitsubishi Estate have been working on the project at a total cost of approximately 600 billion yen. The project consists of the South Urban Area and the North Urban Area, centered on Umekita Park, which boasts 45,000 m2, one of the world’s largest urban parks directly connected to a train station.

Today’s preliminary opening includes the commercial facility “Grand Green Osaka Shops & Restaurants” (20 stores including those in the park) in the North Building (26 stories above ground and 3 below), “JAM BASE,” a core facility for researchers and venture companies to create and disseminate new ideas, and the first hotel in Japan, “Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda,” which will be located in the North District (3 stories below ground and 26 above ground). Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda, the first hotel to open in Japan. In addition, the entire South Park and part of the North Park were opened, and a section of the “Inspiration Path” connecting the north and south sides of the park was opened. As a result, approximately 40% of the entire site is now complete.

Following the opening of the large-scale Grand Front Osaka complex (Umekita Phase 1 Development Project) in 2013, the South Tower, which will house commercial facilities, offices, and a hotel, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2025. The entire area is scheduled to open in 2027.

The opening ceremony of “Grand Green Osaka” was held at Rothaart Square Umekita, a 120-meter-long event space with a large roof in Umekita Park South Park, and the adjacent lawn area. After a performance by the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra (Osaka City Music Troupe) and a performance by balloons and bubble machines, a countdown was held with a large number of visitors, and the event was officially opened at just after 11:00 a.m.
